Description and Argument

The most common types of essays are : topical, exegetical, argumentative, narrative, descriptive, expository, critical, and interpretive. Topics for essays include literature and culture, historical and social science math, engineering, technology, religion and spirituality. Psychology and politics are other examples. As mentioned above these are just a few of the main kinds but there are many more and hybrid ones that mix elements from many of these themes or overlap within certain kinds.

A brief but interesting way to visualize the structure of these different types of essays is to imagine the structure of a tree diagram. The end of each branch of the tree , there is a place called the apex. Every point in the tree is linked to every other point with smaller extensions until there is only one branch at its base. Essays attempt to support its main point with an argument or a conclusion.

The most common argument in essays is some main idea supported by argumentative and evidence supported by facts and examples. The arguments that support the thesis are known as the thesis statement, and the evidence that supports it is referred to as evidence supporting it. A thesis statement summarises the main elements of an essay in most cases.

Another common argument in essays is that the argument has specific evidence that is strong enough to convince the reader(s). This argument technique is utilized in narrative essays. Narrative essays are similar to stories where the writer tells part of the tale as though it were true. These essays don’t make any assertions that aren’t in the story. The narrative style of these essays can be extremely effective when combined with other types arguments.

A five-paragraph essay is a simple version of a narrative essay. Five paragraph essays are written to support just one main point. The five paragraph essay usually begins with an introduction, where the writer outlines the thesis statement and then goes on to outline the primary elements of the essay. Five paragraph essays do not have to convince readers, as the purpose is to convey the information in an organized way and end with a convincing and appropriate conclusion. A descriptive essay is a type of the narrative essay which deals more with explaining things rather than proving any assertion.
